How to wash a wool sweater — by hand and in the machine (step by step)

The most important rule is to follow the care instructions for the particular garment. Fibre content is only a starting point: blend, stitch structure and yarn finishing matter too.
Before washing
Read the instructions supplied with your order. “Merino” or “superwash” does not automatically make every finished sweater machine washable. If instructions are missing, ask the workshop before washing. A wool programme alone is not permission to machine wash.
Does it need washing now?
Airing in a dry place may be enough after wear. Wash when dirt, odour or the garment’s instructions call for it, rather than following a fixed once-a-season schedule. Treat marks gently without rubbing or harsh products.
Hand washing step by step
If the instructions specify hand washing:
- Prepare cool or lukewarm water as directed for the garment.
- Add a detergent suitable for its fibres at the recommended dose. Lanolin is not a compulsory ingredient.
- Immerse gently. Do not rub, scrub or wring.
- If rinsing is required, avoid sudden temperature changes and handle gently.
- Support the wet sweater, place it on a towel and gently press out excess water.
When is machine washing suitable?
Only when the particular garment’s instructions allow it. Use the specified cycle, temperature and spin settings. There is no single safe temperature or spin speed for every wool garment. Ask the workshop if unsure.
Drying flat
Lay the sweater on a dry towel, shape it and leave it in a ventilated place away from direct heat. A wet sweater may stretch on a hanger. Do not tumble dry unless the instructions explicitly permit it. Drying time depends on thickness and conditions.
Merino, alpaca and blends
Do not automatically transfer one sweater’s instructions to another. Silk, cotton, acrylic or polyamide blends may need different care. The finished product’s composition and instructions take priority over general advice.
What if a sweater shrinks or felts?
Do not stretch it forcefully or experiment with hair-conditioner baths. Shrinkage and felting vary, and reversal cannot be promised. Describe the problem to the workshop before trying another treatment.
